Brief biography of Charles Darwin:
Charles Darwin was a naturalist and his known for introducing the theory of evolution and the process of natural selection. He was born on the 12th February, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. Darwin had come from a long line of scientists, his father being a medical doctor.
He enrolled at Edinburgh University in October, 1825 at age 16. He began studying at Christ’s College in Cambridge two years later where he studied natural history. Darwin graduated from Christ College in 1831 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and then he was recommended for a position as a naturalist on board of the HMS Beagle.
The HMS Beagle began its 5 year voyage around the world on the 27th December, 1831. Throughout the journey, Darwin collected various specimens including birds, plants and fossils. He took particular interest in the species he found at Pacific Islands, Galapagos Islands and South America. He returned to England in 1836 and recorded his observations and discoveries.
He then began to develop a theory about the origin of living beings that opposed those of other naturalists at the time. Darwin found similarities in species from all over the world as well as variations in species from particular places. This brought about the belief that all species had gradually evolved from common ancestors.
He believed that a process he called natural selection contributed to the survival of all species. Darwin introduced his theory publicly in 1858 after years of scientific investigation and published a book called On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection, fully explaining his theory.
He died on the 19th April, 1882 in London.
